I have known you since you were a little boy and kept up with you over the years through my daughter
Kelly Martin. You were a very brave little boy and have become a very loving young man - again - I
know this from Kelly Ruth. I am proud of you and will continue praying for you. love, Virginia Bearss

Your writing is easy to understand, effective and quite interesting and informative. It sounded as it came from your heart as well as your mind. Learned much on cancer preventive foods. diet for cancer

Trey: I am so very proud of you for writing this up and sharing this with so many!!! It takes strength and indurance by far to go through what you have lived through with flying colors. I used to speak to the High School boys PE classes...never got to address the athletes...just can't miss that one practice to hear about TSE...but in addressing the topic of testicular self exam...a female nurse to a group of high school boys....took just a little time for the guys to accept it...it took watching the film I showed them that went through the actual process of TSE THREE TIMES...before the initial giggle and teasing and blushing subsided and they started paying attention...this enabled me to then talk about many issues with them and in return the boys actually asked questions. This happened every time I presented to them and in the years after, have had many come to talk to me about many personal issues that they may have never been able to even bring up had the ice not been broken on those days at FSHS. I love teaching--be it breast self exam...male and/or female or TSE to the guys...I even covered TSE with the female classes although they did not watch the "guy in the shower" film...My son would see me in the hall and say "Oh no, what is my mom up here for THIS time...???" Such an easy way to bring this topic to light to those at the highest risk of getting testicular cancer. Young males 17-21 years of age. Once I stopped doing that...I really don't know if ANYone addresses it fully and in as much in detail as it was then. Coaches really have an ideal position to talk to so many young men...and should if they don't already and many, if they could just bring themselves to even saying the word testicle out loud in front of the young men....and so is life.
Congratulations my strong, courageous and blessed cousin.
I love you. Linda Howard-Burch

Governor White, you may remember me better as Christina Gonzalez, and I was a member of your staff as the Director of the Juvenile Justice Education Project in 1984-86. I am so glad to hear about this survival story. I have long admired your work and efforts and foresightedness about what the issues that would challenge our communities would be in the future. Please give my best to Linda Gale.

I am moved to read this account written by my cousin Trey. As many know, family secrets are usually not so secret--but the real agony is the effort that everyone endures attempting to maintain the illusion of a secret. I remember the difficulty we had knowing that Trey had cancer but that we really couldn't talk about it, that he had practically "disappeared" from our lives, and that given the "secret" nature of his illness, we couldn't confront the male-centric culture and its sickening habit of bad jokes and ignorance concerning questions of sexuality and gender. I recall Trey fondly as his eldest cousin on his mom's side of the family. I'm delighted to see him not just surviving cancer, but THRIVING in his life and profession. I've had several friends die of cancer recently, and another struggling with stage 4 cancer now. I don't know how we could handle it if the world hadn't progressed so that people are more comfortable talking about cancer. Thanks, Trey, for your courage and honesty. May all our secrets like this come out in the open so we can truly love and care for those near and dear to us.
